This special collection emphasizes collaborative and multi-level approaches to the prevention of and response to teen dating violence (TDV). It draws on the work of many organizations and organizes the resources on TDV prevention and responses by different populations. The first section of this special collection provides general information about teen dating violence. The next six sections include TDV information related to: 1) young people, 2) bystanders, 3) parents and caregivers, 4) men and boys, 5) teachers and school-based professionals, 6) health care professionals, 7) pregnancy prevention programs, and 8) domestic violence and sexual violence service providers. The final section presents documents on TDV-related laws and legislation. The special collection concludes with examples of national programs that address TDV and a list of national and statewide organizations and programs.

While most available materials on TDV focus on prevention and response to young people in high schools, it is important to acknowledge that TDV prevention also includes outreach to younger teens in middle schools and older college students, as well as youth who are not represented in our system of education (runaways, homeless youth, etc.). Fortunately, there is a growing number of materials across age groups, which is reflected throughout the collection. This special collection will be updated regularly, and new documents will be added as they become available. We welcome your comments, suggestions, and information about documents for this special collection.

This Special Collection offers resources that promote strategies for creating environments where children can thrive with particular focus on enhancing capacity for resilience across the lifespan. While this collection emphasizes primary prevention strategies that foster healthy attitudes and behaviors, it also reflects our understanding of trauma as a common human experience, and explores post-traumatic growth as a positive framework for understanding trauma within the context of child development. Central to this collection is the belief that advocates working to end gender based violence are committed to the safety and well being of all children, and wish to create social change by investing in the potential that children offer – the promise of a new generation of non-violent, respectful young people and adults who resist traditional social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.

The resources in this collection are organized by intended audience and address all levels of the social ecological model. Here you’ll find materials for use by young people, parents and caregivers, teachers and school-based professionals, helping professionals, gender-based violence intervention and prevention advocates, and communities and organizations. Links to related Special Collections are also provided.

This collection was developed as a product of the Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) Leadership Forum, a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence established to amplify the voices and experiences of ACE-DV to enhance our movement to end gender based violence. Special thanks to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence, and the University of Minnesota School of Social Work for supporting the development of this resource.

This Special Collection is designed to help practitioners, administrators and advocates in the fields of Healthy Marriage & Relationship Education (HMRE) and Domestic Violence (DV) - as well as those interested in these fields - understand and learn about the overlapping and complementary goals of each field, and to build bridges in order to effectively address and respond to domestic violence and promote safe and healthy relationships. This collection is based upon new research and lessons from emerging partnerships between these fields at the national, state and community levels.

This collection was developed by the The National Healthy Marriage Resource Center (NHMRC) in collaboration with The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV). Visit the NHMRC's online library of resources on Domestic Violence.

Updates of Note

In July 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the program announcement for the 2011 Community-Centered Healthy Marriage and Relationship Grants. The NRCDV drafted a memo for domestic violence advocates to: 1) provide a basic overview of these grants; 2) identify some questions that advocates might ask if approached to partner in a healthy marriage or relationship program; and 3) describe resources that might be helpful. Press Release: ACF announces over $119 million in Grant Awards for Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood - On October 3, 2011, HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, Office of Family Assistance (OFA) announced $119,393,729 in grant awards to 120 grantees to promote healthy marriage and responsible fatherhood.
Webinar: Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education: What Domestic Violence Advocates Need to Know by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence & National Healthy Marriage Resource Center - On September 19, 2011, the NRCDV hosted this webinar exploring questions such as: What is Healthy Marriage and Relationship (MRE) Education anyway? How have MRE programs worked with domestic violence coalitions and community-based domestic violence programs? What tools have been developed that might be helpful to our DV prevention efforts? Where are the opportunities for collaborative healthy relationship work going forward?

Nearly one decade after the CDC initiated the DELTA Program, there is a strong foundation of information and lessons learned regarding promising practices in the primary prevention of intimate partner violence. This collection highlights the successes of this program and its grantees, providing materials to support replication of these efforts across the United States and globally.

Special thanks to the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCDSV), with whom NRCDV/VAWnet has a collaborative relationship to support the CDC Foundation's DELTA and DELTA PREP grantees in their work to prevent intimate partner violence. The NCDSV also maintains extensive lists of publications and links to DELTA Program-related resources. In addition, we'd like to recognize VAWnet's partner in prevention-focused resource provision and DELTA program support, PreventConnect.org, whose resources are highlighted inside.

This Toolkit organizes information, resources, tips and tools drawn from the wealth of information gathered when the two service systems were convened through local collaborative projects funded by the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This toolkit was originally developed in 2013 by and for advocates in the runaway and homeless youth and domestic violence and sexual assault fields to help programs create partnerships, meaningful services, and effective intervention and prevention strategies for working with youth at risk.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) services reach a relatively small proportion of men, women, and families affected by IPV. Men in particular can be difficult to reach. Services like battering intervention programs (BIPs) can be prohibitively expensive, even though a majority of referrals to BIPs are made through court-ordered mandates or via child protective services requirements. Therefore, not all users of violence can access BIPs even when mandated or required. Further, the stigma and shame attached to being a male survivor of IPV or to receiving either survivor services or services for users of violence can limit disclosures of violence. Federal Responsible Fatherhood (RF) programs serve men who may be at an increased risk for using or being survivors of IPV. Fathers served through these programs may be motivated to seek out IPV services mostly by their desire to become better fathers. Thus, RF programs are in a unique position to address IPV among fathers, and especially to help prevent it from occurring in the first place.

This report summarizes findings from the Preventing and Addressing Intimate Violence when Engaging Dads (PAIVED) research study funded by the Office of Family Assistance (OFA) and overseen by the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE). Child Trends and their partners, Boston Medical Center and Futures Without Violence, conducted the study, which examines how RF programs aim to prevent and address IPV through their fatherhood programming. Specifically, this report presents information about the approaches that RF programs take to provide IPV-related services. It also discusses challenges and successes to providing these services, promising practices, and areas for growth.

The Expect Respect Program is a school-based program designed to promote safe and healthy relationships. The program manual includes: Introduction and Overview; Part I-Increasing Resilience: A Support Group Curriculum and Guide for Facilitators (Grades 3-5); Part II: Building Healthy Relationships: A Support Group Curriculum and Guide for Facilitators (Grades 6-12); and Part III: Developing Youth Leaders: A Guide for Facilitators (Grades 6-12). The goal of this safety card is to be both a survivor-centered resource and a useful conversation starter for health care providers, counselors, social workers, mentors, or other adults working with high-school and college-aged Muslim youth who are doing universal education around healthy relationships and assessing for violence. The card provides information on healthy relationships and sex, guidance and resources for support, how to help a friend, and cultural and religious factors that play into decision-making.
